The Origins… .....of the heritage celebration held in St. Thomas each third weekend and more familiarly known as De Heart uh Barbados ® can be traced back to several developmental tourism programmes commissioned by the then Central Government. In 1998, the Government of Barbados (GOB) commissioned a series of tourism sub-programmes under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism intended to diversify Barbados’ tourism product and focus on heritage and nature tourism. In 1998, the Harrison’s Cave Redevelopment Programme Phase I was carried out to determine the administrative, technical, and financial feasibility of Harrison’s Cave and Associated Sites. The other primary goal of the study was to assess the feasibility of establishing an Integrated Nature Tourism Area (INTA) which incorporated four nature-based visitor attractions of St. Thomas and St. Joseph. The study examined the feasibility of placing greater emphasis on heritage and nature tourism for the benefit of the host community.
