CITES

The Convention regulates trade in species of wild plants and animals listed in three appendices.

Appendix I lists species that are extremely rare and were traded primarily for commercial purposes and for which trade is prohibted,e.g, Sea Turtles

Appendix II deals with species that may become threatened if trade is not regulated ,e.g., most species of hard corals and the vervet monkey

Appendix III species are country specific i.e conservation efforts to protect them are being undertaken in specific countries.

Parties are required to prepare annual reports, which enable the monitoring of the extent of world trade in each species and the identification of potentially harmful trade. For further information please see www.cites.org
